Panelization

Combine individual PCBs into a manufacturing panel to improve fabrication handling, assembly efficiency, machine processing, yield, and production throughput.

Overview

Definition

Panelization is the process of arranging multiple PCB boards into a larger manufacturing panel. Instead of fabricating and assembling individual boards separately, manufacturers process multiple boards together using a panel. Panelization includes board arrays, panel rails, tooling holes, fiducials, breakaway features, and manufacturing support structures.

Objective

Create a robust and manufacturing-friendly panel that supports fabrication, assembly, testing, and depanelization.

Why it matters

Poor panelization can cause panel flexing, assembly defects, misalignment, PCB cracking, low manufacturing yield, and increased production cost. Good panelization improves both quality and productivity.

Inputs

  • Approved PCB Design
  • Mechanical Constraints
  • Fabricator Requirements
  • Assembly Requirements
  • Depanelization Requirements
  • Production Volume Requirements

Outputs

  • Approved Panel Layout
  • Board Array
  • Tooling Hole Locations
  • Fiducial Locations
  • Breakaway Features
  • Manufacturing Panel

Common mistakes

  • No assembly rails
  • Insufficient panel strength
  • Components too close to panel edge
  • Missing fiducials
  • Poor depanelization planning
  • Excessive panel waste
  • Incorrect tooling hole placement
